site as thesis

weather is the condition of the atmosphere in one area at a particular time.  it occurs due to air density difference between one location and another; weather condition varies in different geographical locations, and thus, how people perceive the weather also varies based on the geographical locations.

particularly, in korea, the dynamic weather conditions dominate the whole peninsula, by shaping not only the weather itself, but also the culture.  due to the geographical aspect of peninsula, surrounded by the continent of china and russia, japan, and pacific ocean having each different climate natures, little change in air density impacts deeply on the peninsula.   especially the formation and combination of four major air masses - siberian, yangtze-river, okhotsk, and north pacific - is the key to understand the dynamic and unstable weather conditions is korea.

siberian air mass, which is very cold and dry, formed above the atmosphere of continent, mainly affects korea in winter.  due to its unstable nature, the winter weather in korea is  extremely hard to predict.  yangtze-river air mass is also continental air mass, and is warm and dry.  when it passes through korea from west, it brings yellow dust from china and creates big dust storms in korea during spring and fall.  both okhotsk and north pacific air masses are oceanic air mass.  thus their air is humid.  the only difference is that okhotsk air mass is rather warm, while north pacific air mass is extremely hot.  when these two air masses meet, it forms the seasonal rain front and it lasts for a month.  it becomes a lull when the power of okhotsk air mass is weakened.  and finally when okhotsk air mass is weakened, north pacific ocean extends its influence in korea.

these unique characters in weather in korea affect the creation of unique notion of weather.  since the change in weather is quite often and unstable, korea has twenty four subdivided seasons.  each season has six subdivisions, and each subdivision specifically explains the characters of not only the weather condition, but also the activities and perception based on each season.  for example, in spring, a subdivision called “kyungchip”, means the day when frogs wake up from the long hibernation during winter.
