The thesis will explore the redefined notion of architecture as both a hermetic refuge that encloses oneself from the extreme weather conditions and a responsive shelter that opens up to the extremes.
To study this new revised notion of architecture, a house, which is a fundamental form of refuge of human life from the extreme weather will be used as a basic program of the thesis. However, this house is not only the primary shelter to provide a secure shield to block out oneself from the exterior condition, but also it is in search of distorted atmospheres, account for the exterior condition, that becomes an artificial weather condition of the inside. Various natural weather conditions are the triggers of mutation, then the conditions are manipulated when they come into the house - they mutate temperature gradients, humidity indexes, air masses, luminosity, and scent; this distortion becomes an artificial weather conditions of the inside.
Thus as a result, by conflicting two extremely opposite concepts - a refuge and a responsive shelter, the boundary between natural and artificial weather becomes blurred in this scenario. It investigates various perceptions of ambiguous boundaries of “artificial/natural”, “controlled/non-controlled” or “inside/outside”, as well as a shift from architecture as a mere building to architecture as a conditioner of effects.
Situated at the intersection of binary conditions of natural and artificial, the resident of the house will be the main characters of the scenario - one becomes a user, and at the same, a witness of the designed program. Depending on various time frames of each season, the perception of a user may change. They physically and mentally experience and witness a blurred transformation from the natural conditions to the artificial conditions. Also as a resident who dwells at the house most of the time, one is easily able to observe and perceive the shift; he/she becomes a witness of the process of sensory amplification.

thesis_abstract
Weather is the state of the atmosphere at a specific location at a certain time, which is occurred by meteorologic variables such as air flow and pressure (wind), moisture, temperature, and cloudiness. Due to its instability and constant change in condition, weather is considered as a highly uncontrollable and unpredictable environment.
It is common to think that weather is beyond human scale and capability to control and predict. However, human has developed the ability to control the conditions of weather. For example, recent climate change in Asian region is, in fact, caused by excessive human activities. Also new scientific technology to optimize the condition of ionosphere such as cloud seeding and many attempts to create weather control system for the military such as weaponized weather show the possibility of controlling the weather, and furthermore the climate.
Then what if architects become a creator/controller of the (dynamic) weather and at the same time, a designer/producer of a refuge from this artificial weather? Architecture has been developed as a means to provide a shelter from exterior, which separates one from the extreme weather. Therefore an architect has designed an interior space that provides an adequate environment surrounded by separating walls, which isolates one from the exterior (natural) weather. However, it would create an unusual relationship between weather and architecture, and hermetic and reactive atmosphere/environment, if architects design artificial weather conditions, and utilize the specific characteristics of these weather conditions.
Thus this thesis will use the weather as an agent to create a fluctuating relationship between atmosphere/environment and architecture. Also it will explore transformed conditions and revised notions of architecture, as producing a hermetic refuge that encloses the interior to account for the extremes as well as creating a responsive object that opens up to the extremes.
The format of weather maps to explain the artificial conditions designed by architects and the graphs/charts of scientific data will be developed in architectural format drawings as an approach to explore the relationship/connection between the weather conditions and architecture, and as a methodology to study new notion of weather and architecture. Also for further investigation of this thesis, the particular conditions of artificial weather and architecture should be developed as an artifact to explain the thesis. Possibly the exploration in the existing technologies in meteorology of creating artificial weather will be considered as well.

weather is the condition of the atmosphere in one area at a particular time. it occurs due to air density difference between one location and another; weather condition varies in different geographical locations, and thus, how people perceive the weather also varies based on the geographical locations.
particularly, in korea, the dynamic weather conditions dominate the whole peninsula, by shaping not only the weather itself, but also the culture. due to the geographical aspect of peninsula, surrounded by the continent of china and russia, japan, and pacific ocean having each different climate natures, little change in air density impacts deeply on the peninsula. especially the formation and combination of four major air masses - siberian, yangtze-river, okhotsk, and north pacific - is the key to understand the dynamic and unstable weather conditions is korea.
siberian air mass, which is very cold and dry, formed above the atmosphere of continent, mainly affects korea in winter. due to its unstable nature, the winter weather in korea is extremely hard to predict. yangtze-river air mass is also continental air mass, and is warm and dry. when it passes through korea from west, it brings yellow dust from china and creates big dust storms in korea during spring and fall. both okhotsk and north pacific air masses are oceanic air mass. thus their air is humid. the only difference is that okhotsk air mass is rather warm, while north pacific air mass is extremely hot. when these two air masses meet, it forms the seasonal rain front and it lasts for a month. it becomes a lull when the power of okhotsk air mass is weakened. and finally when okhotsk air mass is weakened, north pacific ocean extends its influence in korea.
these unique characters in weather in korea affect the creation of unique notion of weather. since the change in weather is quite often and unstable, korea has twenty four subdivided seasons. each season has six subdivisions, and each subdivision specifically explains the characters of not only the weather condition, but also the activities and perception based on each season. for example, in spring, a subdivision called “kyungchip”, means the day when frogs wake up from the long hibernation during winter.

house as thesis
Survivor Kit is a transportable emergency shelter in extreme weather conditions - heavy rain and snow, hail, strong winds, dust storm, sweltering heat, etc. It provides a minimal living space (10’x10’x11’ when folded, 16’x10’x11’ when unfolded) for one person, with sleeping, washing, cooking, and resting area for the needs of basic surviving activities.
Though it is pretty small, it can be expanded through sliding units - sleeping and cooking area. Once the house is located, one can customize the space, if bigger space is necessary. Also there is hidden furniture - chairs and a table - inside of the floor. To use these, one can simply pick them up from the floor, place them into any configuration based on the situations as long as the space allows.
It is a prefabricated module with light, yet durable and weather-resistant material. The walls are insulated with high R-value materials so that it can be prevented from freezing or having too much heat inside. Its lightweight structure makes possible to have better transportability by truck, boat, or helicopter.

"laziness, one of the seven cardinal sins, is one of an architect's most useful characteristics."
"the combination of laziness and ambition ensures a pleasing balance, which often leads to happy results because compensating for laziness requires the application of ingenuity."
"oddly enough, these lists neglect the best possible way of achieving durability, i.e., by not building at all or by reusing an entire building. laziness can be an important ecological instrument."
